Over the last three years Tom has been working on scuptures for the garden of Plane Castle, owned by John and Nancy Wright, in Stilringshire near the sight of the Battle of Bannockburn. There were already several sculptures in the garden, by John Brown, Walter Awlson, and by John Wright himself. John has rebuilt the castle from a shell, since 1990."First the Wrights purchased "Leda", an abstract figure in Paunazza marble. John then commissioned a life-size "nymph", which i worked on at Arco Arte in Carrara in October 2003, using elements of the "Maia" painting by Goya. The finished work, "Maia", was exhibited at the RSA in Edinburgh in December 2003, before being installed at Plane.
John's next idea was to have two "Medieval Warriors", based on the Lewis chess set. I carved these in Brownieside stone, almost life size, finishing in December 2004, and installing these with the help of the neighbouring farmer and his giant tractor/forklift.
Now we plan to continue the chess theme, with pieces in different stones, perhaps a White Queen, a Green Knight, and so on."
